Despite the recent weather, AKS played host for the annual U15s sevens competition last week. There were 15 teams from across some of the top rugby-playing schools in the North West, involving over 180 students throughout the day.

The success of the competition on the field was aided by the support of the Manchester Referee Society and AKS Sixth Form, with six students involved in the running of the competition: namely Daniel, Harry, Nathan, Owen, Roman, and Toby.

AKS progressed from the group stages into the cup competition, with impressive wins over Lancaster RGS and Altrincham GS. This meant that they met Stonyhurst in the Cup Semi-Final, with Kirkham against Lancaster RGS in the other semi. Stonyhurst ran out cup winners beating Kirkham in the final.

In the Trophy competition, Manchester Grammar overcame Merchant Taylors and St Marys Crosby beat Giggleswick to meet in the final, with Manchester GS winning the Trophy.

In the plate competition, Wirral beat Altrincham in the semi-finals with Stockport joining them in the final after a tough game against Birkenhead GS. In a very intense and evenly matched contest, the final was eventually won by Wirral.

Overall, despite a damp start, this was a wonderful day and a great experience for all students involved.

Reflecting on the tournaments Mr Walmsley, Director of Sport said:

“I was immensely impressed by the level of the performance from all of the schools involved. After a turbulent couple of years for sport, this has served as a reminder of the hotbed of rugby talent we have across the North West. Well done to all of today’s winners and we look forward to hosting again next year."
