U16 Hockey Team win thrilling Cup Match against Sedbergh School

PUBLISHED 17 November 2021

AKS U16 Hockey team continued their superb season and are celebrating a thrilling penalty shoot out win against Sedbergh School and now progress into the next round of the National Schools Competition.

Sedbergh started on the front foot switching play well and putting us under pressure but great team pressing from the front and hard work in midfield limited their progress forward. We were grateful when a  well worked Sedbergh corner whistled just wide but great link play between Charlotte T and Carly W on the right saw us create chances of our own but at half time the scores remained level at 0 – 0.

After the break Sedbergh continued to pass the ball well but great pressing again by Jessie A, Carly W and Patsy C on the front line made it difficult for them to break lines. Sedbergh , however did create scoring chances and we needed a superb diving interception from England U16 goalkeeper Anya J to prevent them from finding the net.  In an end to end game it was the Sedbergh keeper who was on hand when a great through ball from Lucy B saw Patsy C break clear  only to have her effort saved and the scores remained level at 0 – 0. More great saves from Anya J thwarted Sedbergh best efforts and with scores level at the final whistle the tie was to be decided on penalty strokes.

The 5 AKS penalty takers stepped forward and Lucy B slotted the first stroke home to get us off to a great start. Anya J then saved the first Sedbergh stoke which put us in the driving seat. Carly W converted our second stroke and with another save from Anya the odds were swinging in our favour. Charlotte T coolly slot home her stroke and when another Sedbergh stroke was saved by Anya J we celebrated a hard fought win and progression in to the next round of the cup! A fantastic performance which was made even more special as key players Olivia and Maddie were out injured but our strength in depth saw other players come in and step up to the mark playing superbly in the team performance!
