Year 6 Get Hands-On with Heart Science
Year 6 pupils recently took part in one of the most memorable experiences of their final year: Dr Carey’s much-anticipated annual heart dissection session. A firm favourite in the Prep School calendar, this engaging workshop brings their “Healthy Bodies” topic sharply into focus.
Equipped with aprons, gloves and plenty of enthusiasm, the children explored a real calf’s heart, gaining a first-hand look at how this vital organ works. From identifying chambers and tracing blood flow to examining valves and major vessels, the session offered a powerful insight into the inner workings of the circulatory system. It’s the sort of experience that captures imaginations—not just in Year 6, but also among younger pupils keenly awaiting their own turn in the years ahead.
What makes the session so impactful is the balance between expert guidance and pupil-led enquiry. Dr Carey creates an open, supportive environment where curiosity thrives, and no question is too small. The highlight, as always, is the lively Q&A, where pupils eagerly put their questions forward and receive clear, thoughtful explanations. Complex ideas become accessible and, for some, the experience sparks a genuine interest in pursuing science or medicine in the future.
More than just a science lesson, the workshop nurtures important skills such as teamwork, observation and critical thinking. By engaging directly with real biological structures, pupils deepen their understanding in a way that simply can’t be replicated through textbooks alone.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr Carey for giving his time so generously each year. His dedication and expertise make this experience truly special, and it continues to be one of the standout moments of the Year 6 journey.
