Year 13 Mark Final Chapter at Headmaster’s Dinner with Address from David Cam DL

The annual Headmaster’s Dinner took place on Friday 25th April, bringing together Year 13 students, sixth form tutors, schoolleadershipand governors for an evening of reflection and celebration. Held in the OAKS Hall, the event began with adrinksreception on the lawns in front of Senior School, followed by a delicious three-course meal prepared by our talented catering team led by Head Chef, Steve Shepherd, with special sponsorship from Lexington Independents.

The Dinnerprovides a special opportunity for our Sixth Form studentsto experience a formal occasion as they approach the final stages of their school journey and prepare for their A-level examinations.

The evening was opened by Headmaster David Harrow, who reflected on a quote by the Roman Emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius: “Time is like a river made up of the events which happen, and a violent stream; for as soon as a thing has been seen, it is carried away, and another comes in its place.” He encouraged students to recognise the pace at which time passes and to value the present moment, making the most of their final weeks at school, appreciating the relationships they have built, and looking ahead with purpose and confidence.

This year, David Cam DL BA, Barrister and Under Sheriff of the County Palatine of Lancaster, delivered the after-dinner speech. A former parent of the school, David enjoyed a distinguished career with the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Group, where he served as Company Secretary and Director, and has played an influential role as an ambassador for Blackpool, Lancashiretourismand the wider leisure industry. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant in 2012 and, following his retirement, became Under Sheriff of the County Palatine of Lancaster in 2015.

In his address, David spoke to students as they prepare to go on study leave, encouraging them tomaintainthehigh standardsthat have provided the foundations for their success so far. He urged them to embrace the opportunities ahead, follow their passions, and approach the future with determination and ambition.

In his closing remarks, David encouraged students to make the most of their networks, to seek advice, remain open to learning, and strive to be exceptional in their chosen fields. He reminded them that success comes through hard work, resilience, and a willingness to take opportunities when they arise.

Head Student Harper C offered thanks on behalf of the Sixth Form leavers, expressing gratitude to their teachers for their support and guidance, as well as to the wider school community and their families. Head Student Alfie K then presented David with a token of appreciation on behalf of the year group.

The evening wasbrought to a closewitha strong senseof pride and anticipation, as students reflected on their time at AKS and looked ahead to the exciting opportunities beyond.
