This week, AKS students from Year 7 to Year 13 took part in the first mock trial run by a co-curricular club that has grown out of the long-running Model United Nations programme. Organised by Mr Donovan, Head of Religious Studies, the case explored was the high-profile trial of Oscar Pistorius.
In the weeks leading up to the event, students reviewed real evidence, built arguments and honed their questioning skills, aiming to persuade the jury, made up of staff from across the school, in the hope of hearing their preferred verdict.
Mr Donovan said: “Students are gaining skills in debate and public speaking. They have been reviewing the evidence from the case, and applying their own knowledge and questioning, in order to gain the verdict they desire.”
This mock trial is just one of the many co-curricular opportunities available to students at AKS. Our extensive programme offers over 90 clubs and activities each week, encouraging pupils to explore new interests, develop talents and build skills beyond the classroom.
It was inspiring to see so many pupils giving their own time to an activity that develops confidence, critical thinking and clear communication; skills that will benefit them both in school and in the future.
