My Journey with the Pauline Quirke Academy

Hi, I’m Isabelle C in Year 9, and I’m so excited to share my journey of applying for – and winning – a Drama Scholarship with the Pauline Quirke Academy (PQA). It’s been an incredible experience so far, and I hope you enjoy hearing all about it!

Why I Applied and How It Worked

Drama has always been my passion. For me, it’s like stepping into someone else’s shoes and telling stories that make people laugh, cry, or think. Whether I’m performing in the school musical or just acting silly at home, drama is where I feel most alive. When I heard about the PQA Drama Scholarship, I knew I had to go for it. PQA is a local performing arts academy, and I saw it as the perfect chance to learn more and grow as a performer.

The application process was straightforward: I had to email Miss Worthington and answer three questions – why I wanted the scholarship, what it would mean to me, and why I love drama. I spent a long time crafting my email because I wanted it to be just right. I wrote about how drama helps me communicate and express myself, and how I dream of learning more about acting, comedy, and even filmmaking. I explained that the scholarship would give me the chance to meet others who share the same passion and to develop my skills in a supportive environment.

A few days later, I got the call that I’d won the scholarship! I was in complete shock – but absolutely over the moon!

What Winning Felt Like

Winning the scholarship filled me with so much gratitude and excitement. I honestly didn’t expect to be chosen, and knowing I was given this opportunity made me feel really proud.

My First Two Sessions at PQA

Although I’ve only had two sessions so far, I’ve already learned so much and had an amazing time. PQA runs on Friday evenings for three hours, split into three sections: Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre, and Film & Television.

At my first session, I was nervous walking in – I didn’t know anyone – but everyone was so friendly and welcoming that I quickly felt at home. We kicked things off with improv games in Comedy & Drama, and I laughed so much I forgot to be shy! In Musical Theatre, we started learning a song and dance routine from Rock of Ages. Then, in Film & Television, we brainstormed props for scenes we’ll be recreating from Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. It was amazing to see everyone’s imagination in action.

At the end of the session, they announced the ‘Performer of the Week’ – and it was me! I was shocked but so happy. They said I brought lots of energy and enthusiasm, which made me feel incredible.

The second session was just as fun. We started working on puppetry as part of our comedy skills, preparing for an upcoming performance. We also played an EastEnders-themed version of Zip Zap Boing – I laughed so hard it hurt! In Musical Theatre, we added more to our routine, and I’m starting to feel more confident with the choreography. We didn’t do Film & TV this week because the younger group was filming a scene from Wonka, which I can’t wait to see!

What’s Next

I’m so excited for what’s to come. Even after just a few weeks, I feel more confident, and I’ve already made friends who love drama just as much as I do. This scholarship has opened a door to an amazing opportunity, and I’m incredibly grateful to be part of the PQA family.
