GCSE & A-Level Composers Concert - An Evening of Original Musical Compositions

On Thursday 1 October, students, parents and staff gathered for our inaugural Composers' Concert, an evening dedicated to celebrating the creativity, imagination and musical skill of our young composers.

The concert showcased original compositions written by GCSE and A Level Music students, providing a rare opportunity for work that is often assessed behind the scenes to be brought to life in performance. The audience enjoyed a fascinating and varied programme which demonstrated both the technical understanding and individuality of our student composers.

The evening opened with compositions by Maxwell, whose folk-inspired setting of The Lake Isle of Innisfree and radiant choral work Ave Verum Corpus highlighted his versatility as a composer. Anika brought energy and flair to the programme with her lively piano-led piece Velvet Samba, while Finlay's atmospheric horror score The Rhythm of the Damned demonstrated a confident command of film music techniques.

A special highlight was Dawn of Glory by Austin, a talented Year 8 student whose mature and accomplished writing for cornet and piano impressed performers and audience alike. Hollie showcased her creativity through two contrasting works: the elegant string and piano piece The Blackwell Engagement and the contemporary musical theatre duet Today, which brought the concert to a thoughtful and uplifting conclusion.

The programme also featured Emberfall: Song of the Veiled Sea, an ambitious A Level composition by Jacob inspired by fantasy video game soundtracks, and Penny's exciting film score In Disguise, a high-energy chase sequence for trumpet, piano and drums which captivated the audience with its sense of drama and momentum.

The concert reflected the breadth of musical interests represented within the department, encompassing influences as diverse as English folk music, choral traditions, film and television scores, musical theatre, Latin American dance music and contemporary gaming soundtracks. Above all, it showcased the creativity, dedication and hard work of our young musicians.

I am extremely proud of all the composers, as well as all of the performers who helped bring these compositions to life. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the event. The success of this first Composers' Concert made for a memorable evening, and we look forward to making it a regular feature of the school musical calendar.
