Last Thursday we were delighted to host St George’s College from Quilmes, Argentina, for a fantastic series of hockey and rugby matches that celebrated both competition and friendship between our schools. The fixture was particularly special as it followed on from AKS’s memorable rugby tour to Argentina in July, when our students visited St George’s and experienced their warm hospitality. The day was made even more meaningful by the presence of alumnus Jon Mellor (KES 1960–1970) and his wife Wendy. Now living in St Bees, Jon returned to AKS to take a trip down memory lane, visiting his old classroom and the OAKS Hall, known to KES alumni as Big School. We also shared with Jon a copy of his original student file, which was a special highlight of the visit. In a wonderful coincidence, Jon’s son Allan Mellor, currently Deputy Head at St George’s College, was also at AKS with the touring party. Father and son were able to meet on campus, further underlining the deep and enduring connections between our schools. Jon himself once taught at St George’s College, and with Allan now serving as Deputy Head there, this fixture became a true celebration of friendship and shared history across continents. That spirit of friendship carried onto the pitches despite some very British weather. Driving rain, strong winds and even hail could not dampen the enthusiasm of players or supporters as the visiting teams faced our U15 rugby and hockey sides. The rugby match began as a tight contest, but relentless pressure from St George’s, helped by a fierce headwind that pinned AKS in their own 22, brought three early tries. AKS responded with a well-worked score from Harry M after an excellent lineout catch and drive, yet the worsening conditions added further challenge. By the final whistle the visitors had claimed five tries to one, but both sides shared smiles and stories over match tea, with captains and coaches exchanging small gifts in recognition of a game played in the best possible spirit. Meanwhile the U15 hockey teams delivered equally spirited performances. The B team recovered from a slow start that saw two quick St George’s goals, growing in confidence as Isobelle C, Natalie H and Lauren A linked play effectively. Defensive grit from Katie D and Casey Mc, along with outstanding saves from Kathryn S, kept the second half scoreless for an encouraging 0–2 result. The A team endured the heaviest hail showers of the day and an early goal from the visitors, but responded superbly. Lauren M anchored the defence while Isla C’s surging runs created chances, and a spectacular reverse-stick effort from Camilla W rattled the crossbar. Despite sustained late pressure, AKS could not find the equaliser and the match finished narrowly 0–1. Though the scoreboard favoured St George’s, the occasion was defined by camaraderie and mutual respect.
