Five AKS Year 12 students recently attended the launch of a new Specialist Heart Service at On Call Doctors in Blackpool, giving them a valuable opportunity to see cardiology in action and learn directly from medical professionals.
The launch introduced a specialist cardiology service where expert cardiology consultants will work closely alongside On Call Doctors to provide enhanced heart care for patients. The event was well attended by patients, healthcare staff and local representatives, including the Mayor, highlighting the importance of the service for the local community.
During the visit, students were given the chance to see specialist cardiac equipment up close and watch live demonstrations using an echo machine. They spoke directly with cardiology consultants and On Call doctors, asking questions about heart diagnostics, working in clinical settings and the different routes into medicine. For many of the students, it was their first experience of seeing this level of healthcare delivery first-hand.
The visit has also opened up exciting future possibilities, with discussions taking place around potential mentorship opportunities with On Call Doctors. These experiences would allow students to gain further insight into the profession and receive guidance as they continue to consider careers in medicine or healthcare.
This opportunity reflects the strong emphasis at AKS on providing meaningful, real-world experiences that support students both academically and personally. By engaging with professionals and experiencing healthcare environments beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity and a deeper understanding of their future pathways.
Visits like this allow AKS students to challenge themselves, ask thoughtful questions and build aspirations, showing how the school continues to support ambitious learners through purposeful and inspiring opportunities.
We extend our sincere thanks to On Call Doctors for their continued support and for providing such an insightful and inspiring experience for our students.
