AKS 1st and 2nd Hockey Squads open their season

The large AKS Senior Hockey Squad opened their season with the 2nd XI facing Stonyhurst while
the 1st XI played in the first round of the Independent Schools Cup against Kings Macclesfield.
AKS 2nd XI played Stonyhurst in a closely contested match. A competitive encounter saw good
opportunities for both side to score. A run down the right wing saw AKS take the lead half way
through the half when Stevie S found the net but their lead was quickly cancelled out by
a short corner strike from Stonyhurst and the teams went in to the break level at 1 – 1.
In the second half, AKS started to enjoy more possession and saw their pressure pay off with a
good team goal, converted by Maisie McK, to take the 2-1 win. A great contest between the
two teams and lots of positives to take into the next match. Amelie C was the opposition
player of the match.
In their first game of the season, the 1st XI travelled to a well organised team at Kings Macclesfield.
After a long journey, the opposition started off with purpose and put AKS under great pressure but
the scores remained level thanks to some great defending from Sophia M, Esther T and Lilly G along
with fantastic saves from Sophie S. AKS began to find their feet but Kings pressure evetualyy told and
they scored two quick goal. Despite going behind a great defensive effort was put in by the team
and the scored remained at 0-2 at the break.
A restructure at half time, saw a much more even contest in the second half with AKS creating goal
scoring opportunities the best falling to Rosie L but her shot on target was snuffed out by a fast
approaching Kings GK. More great defending by all the team and saves from Sophie saw us keep a
clean sheet in the second half so the final score was 0 – 2.
Players of the match for AKS were Sophia M and Sophie S who both performed superbly.
A good game with lots of positives to take away and learning opportunities to take into the
Cup Plate competition and the National Schools Cup 1st round against Manchester High School.
