A Sweeney Todd rehearsal diary entry - by Sammy C

In our Monday session we focused on staging and choreographing “Kiss Me” this number is 3 parts throughout the show. Part II 0of the song has a lot of fast movements; due to the speed of the piece. The song is sung by Anthony and Johanna, in Sweeney Todd I am playing the role of Johanna and Anthony is played Johnnie R. The focus of this song is about the secret relationship that Anthony and Johanna share and how they both want to be together and get married. But Johanna is anxious that Judge Beadle will find out and separate them.

On Thursday we spent time choreographing the number “Fogg’s Asylum” in this number Anthony goes searching for Johanna. In this scene, Lucy ends up in the asylum, which symbolises her tragic descent into madness because of trauma and loss. The asylum represents themes of societal neglect and the harsh realities faced by the vulnerable. This setting underscores the dark atmosphere of the musical, highlighting the injustices that lead to Todd's eventual quest for revenge. This was my favourite number we worked on this week as it was so much fun seeing everyone explore their characters and see them come to life in the scene.
