AKS Hockey Teams enjoy great games against Queens School, Chester

PUBLISHED 13 January 2020

With an exciting term of Saturday fixtures and County tournaments ahead AKS started the second half of the season with some superb close matches against the very strong Queens School, Chester .

A combined U15/14 side faced the Queens U15 side who started strongly putting us under pressure from start and they deservedly went ahead in the 8th minute. We slowly gained confidence and started to play some great passing hockey with Laura coming close to scoring with a superb reverse stick shot that only a great save from the Queen’s keeper kept out of the net. Lifted by this we enjoyed a lot of the ball and a great passing move on the right with Ziv  and  Presha linking well bought another save from the keeper. We got reward for our great play when Patsy found the net after a superb move which saw us switch channels and attack at pace. Lucy dominated the middle of the pitch and was a constant driving force forwards but it was Queens who went in to the break ahead after a goal late in the half.

After the break it was the pacey, skilful Queens team that started the quicker and they went further ahead in only the 3rd minute with a superb reverse stick shot into the corner of the goal. We continued to work hard in both attack and defence and got a goal back when Patsy was again on hand to finish off a great passing move to make the score 2-3. Queens however were always dangerous but great tackling from Ellie thwarted many attacks. As legs tired Queens started to enjoy more time and space and despite the best efforts of all the team it was Queens that found the net next and with two more goals the final score was 2-6. Despite losing the team can take great credit from playing some superb hockey against very strong opposition. Players of the match were Ellie for her excellent play at the back and Lucy for her dynamic running in midfield.

The AKS U13 A team faced the Queens U14 A team and put in a fantastic team performance. Knowing they were facing a strong team from Queen's Chester and their toughest match of the season so far the AKS girls improved the pace at which they executed their hockey skills and their decision making. Although conceding a goal 9 minutes into the game they remained  calm and unflustered  and eventually scored their first goal with a fine reverse hit at goal from Jessie A and honours were even at half time.  At the start of second half AKS denied Queen's Chester any possession and within the first minute we took the lead with a great passage of play, consisting of numerous passes and Jessie A scoring her second goal of the match. Queens were always a threat and they once again found the net to draw level. AKS scored their third goal  with yet another great passing sequence, instigated by great interpassing between Layla  and Carly and finally finished by Sophie just inside the left post. The game finished 3-3 which was a most commendable performance by the U13 girls and one they should be proud of.

A combined AKS U14/13 team faced Queens U14 B team and quickly settled to the fast pace of the 7 a side game. Carys and Alexa injected pace up front and were unlucky not to find the back of the net in the opening half. Esme and Pryianka defended well and Amelie L delivered some great passes out of the danger area with pace and accuracy. Queens did pile on the pressure and scored but heads did not go down and Carys got on the end of a cross on the left post to equalize before the break. After half time AKS continued to work hard and adapt to new positions. Anya made some great tackles on the left side and floated passes to Kate who continued to keep the pressure on the Queens defence. Queens broke and took the lead but a great cross from Alexa found Katy in the circle and she made no mistake in finding the back of the net  to make the final score 2-2. Player of the Match was Katie T
