Continuity is one of the reasons parents choose an AKS education.
Our nursery and preparatory students benefit from our close links with our senior school, situated on the same campus. These include being taught by specialist teachers for languages, music and sport.
Years 5 and 6 attend Discovery and Taster Days which prepare them for life in the senior school. These events supplement the ongoing transition programme which enables a seamless transition between school entry points. Many of our Year 6 pupils achieve academic, music and sport scholarships by taking the entrance examination for Year 7.
Those in Years 5, 6 and 7 participate in blended specialist sports coaching which challenges our most able players. This whole school approach has been phenomenally successful, resulting in our strong track record of students who play at county and national levels for Hockey – including the 2018/19 U18 England Hockey Captain.
In addition to specialist teaching and supporting the transition to senior school, the preparatory school has the use of shared facilities, including sports pitches and sports halls; the senior school music and drama studios; as well as the science laboratories. From Year 3, students are also invited to use our main dining hall in the senior school where they have a wider range of choice for lunch.
Senior students act as role models for preparatory school pupils when they support Twilight club and sports clubs; as well as listening to readers which contributes to the service component of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Other senior school students undertake work experience with us in anticipation of a career in teaching. Senior school performing arts students relish the opportunity to perform to an enthusiastic preparatory school audience for ‘Book at Bedtime’ and our other seasonal events. Likewise, our preparatory students perform alongside their senior counterparts at senior school events and visit senior departments for extension activities.
