Year 8 Evie on target for success

PUBLISHED 29 April 2020

Talented AKS Year 8 pupil Evie has proved herself to be a true sporting all-rounder being a member of the successful AKS U13 Hockey squad who were crowned Lancashire Champions and qualified for the North of England finals and also a star performer in the U13 Indoor cricket team who also qualified for the North Indoor Cricket finals. It is however in the sport of archery that Evie is ‘shooting for the stars’!

Evie has only been shooting since June 2017 and has achieved so much at archery in this short time. Evie got the bug for archery after trying a “have a go” session at a Centre Parks holiday centre and decided that she would like to take up the sport. Inspired by her Grandad, Terry Finnigan she completed a Beginners Course in June 2017 at Blackpool Bowmen and there has been no stopping her since! She spent the summer training at her Grandad’s club Assheton Bowmen, Manchester, and one of the club coaches recognised Evie’s obvious potential and determination to learn about archery and he spent time coaching and developing her skills.

Evie returned to Blackpool Bowmen in April 2018 to compete in her first open competitive junior archery event their Open Metrics competition and was an instant hit. She shot so well and set an amazing 6 Lancashire County and 6 Northern Regional County Junior records and that’s where the journey began. Since then Evie has competed at Club, County, Regional and National tournaments both Indoors and Outdoors and has an impressive collection of medals, trophies and records!

Her natural talent sees her shoot  two types of bow and two types of competition. The Recurve Barebow is a bow with the sight and stabilizers removed. This makes it more challenging to succeed. Arrows for this type of bow are aluminum or carbon with plastic vanes. The Traditional Longbow is a traditional wooden bow and arrows are wooden with feather vanes.

In Target Archery competitions distances are determined by age group and Evie shoots at distances up to 40 metres and Clout Archery is where archers shoot at a Flag (Clout) at distance and scoring zone is marked out on the ground. Archers are scored on how close they get to the Clout. Evie shoots at 75 metre distance.

Her obvious talent has seen her be included in the England Junior Archery squad and she is currently ranked 2nd nationally in the Junior Barebow Clout Archery category and 4th in Target Archery category. She is also a Junior Master Bowman the highest Junior award classification available.

In 2019 Evie achieved an incredible 52 Lancashire County Records and 5 National records as well as claiming 2 National Championships, 2 National Bronze Medals, 6 Regional Championships and 7 County Championships.

The Coronavirus has of course cut short the 2020 archery season and but Evie has competed in two indoor events and was once again in record breaking form setting 4 County, 3 Regional and 2 National Records!

The outdoor season is on hold but like all talented sportswomen Evie is busy training at home by conducting arm & shoulder strengthening exercises, running and cycling.

The future certainly looks bright for Evie and everyone at AKS wishes her every success when she continues with her archery.
