World Book Day - 4th March

Mr Rice (Prep School English Coordinator) Introduces exciting plans for this year's World Book Day!

As part of our drive to engage and promote pupil interest in reading, we have arranged a World Book Day event on Thursday 4th March.

This year, our theme for World Book Day is ‘Books from Other Cultures’. The Round Square Internationalism pillar committee would like to enhance the children’s learning about other ethnicities, traditions and values.

On this special day, I would like the children to dress as their favourite character or author from any book, alongside bringing in their favourite story. During this special week, the children will be participating in lots of exciting activities.

Each class will be joining interactive lessons with famous authors and illustrators, for example Year 6 will attend a comedy writing sketch online workshop with the author Simon James Green and ‘Design a Witch’ with Katy Birchall.

I would like to set the children three challenges; you can do all of them if you would like to!

1. A short writing activity- the children to write a poem about their favourite book for their friends to guess which book it is. Please see my attempt at a Haiku here- can you guess the book? In the deep dark wood Orange eyes a purple back Beware of the mouse!

2. ‘Book in a Box’- create a 'diorama' (model) of a book of your choice, using any materials you have at home and recreate your favourite scene from a book you love. Please send a photo of your creation to Vincent.Rice@akslytham.com if you are working from home; if at school, I would love to see your creation. Our judging panel will decide the winner!

3. To read one million words from the 1st-5 th March. Everyone can take part, so please read books and take the quiz on Accelerated Reader. I know together that we can achieve this target!

For any further information on the AKS World Book Day or the above challenges, please do not hesitate to contact me - happy reading!
