Smoothie bike-ability in Year 6!

PUBLISHED 25 June 2021

The Year 6 pupils enjoyed a real treat this week with our Head Chef Steve Shepherd, combining physical activity and healthy eating together using fruit, a food blender, and a bicycle!  They learned about the importance of eating nutritious fruits and vegetables and incorporating them into our diet.  The fun was being able to make a mouth-watering smoothie using a pedal-powered smoothie bicycle! This was also a great opportunity to refresh their science knowledge on forces, friction, gears and pulleys!  What a great way to start the week after the children had just spent a week at home doing on-line learning whilst self-isolating.  It has also inspired the children to get out on their bikes more, especially with the holidays lurking around the corner!

To make the smoothies, the children had to attach the blender to a wire that was connected to a gear that kept the bike stationary but powered the blender instead. Amazing!  This also provided a great opportunity to talk about sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint, and generally being more environmentally friendly.  Mr Shepherd could not have timed this any better as the children have just begun their new geography study of Scandinavia this week – exploring sustainability!   Listening to the children, I am sure we will see many more deciding to cycle to school from September. What better way to save fossil fuels and electricity by getting out on our bikes, keeping fit, and leaving the car on the drive! The children were then able to experiment making their own healthy smoothie recipes!

All of Year 6 would like to thank our Head Chef again, Mr Steve Shepherd for using this unique tool to help promote healthy eating and physical activity at AKS. They really were waxing lyrical about the experience and were keen to tell us their thoughts!

“We are so lucky to have the best Head Chef return to AKS.” Anika

“I feel so healthy after combining exercise with a nutritious drink.” Milly

“I’m going to try some more recipes at home.” Sam

The children now have another memorable experience from their time in their final year before they transition to Senior School in September.  What more do you want on a beautiful sunny day at school? Healthy food, healthy exercise, environmental awareness, lots of fun, and a delicious smoothie to drink at the end of it!

Here’s one of our favourite recipes created by Ava and Camilla. Try it out for yourself:

2 cups of low-fat yoghurt.

2 cups of fresh strawberries

1 cup of fresh raspberries.

3 cubes of chocolate

1 cup of ice
