The School flag flew at half-mast on Monday 9th December to mark the funeral of Gwynedd Roberts, aged 89, who served for three decades as a teacher of Physics at King Edward VII School, Lytham.
Gwyn Roberts, a native Welsh speaker, was born in 1935 to a farming family in the small village of Llanbedr, near Harlech in Mid Wales. He attended Barmouth Grammar School and then Bangor University where he graduated with an Honours degree in Physics and trained as a teacher.
His first teaching post was at Wigan Grammar School and Gwyn then moved to Lytham with his new wife Marjorie in 1965 and joined the Physics Department at King’s Edward’s.
Julian Wilde, former Headmaster of King Edward’s has said,
“Gwyn was always popular with his Lytham pupils and much liked in the staff room for his efficient and effective teaching. He was modest and unassuming, but on occasions was a superb and comical raconteur.”
Gwyn Roberts had a lifelong interest in sport, coaching one of the school cricket teams and turning out regularly for the staff cricket eleven. Following his retirement he was able to fulfil his aim of visiting every one of the 92 Football League grounds.
Gwyn and Marjorie, who died in 2007, were regular attenders at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Lytham and the Rev. Nick Wells paid tribute at his funeral to Gwyn’s sixty years of support for the church.
Gwyn’s two sons Gareth and Peter had made all the arrangements for the funeral which included three Welsh hymns.
In recent years Gwyn was a regular and enthusiastic attendee at the coffee mornings arranged for retired KEQMS staff and his funeral was attended by a dozen of his former colleagues.
