Mrs Winterflood is delighted and very honoured to receive a commemorative £5 coin to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s life as a token of thanks from the DofE Award for many years of volunteering. It is particularly special as only 50 of these coins have been awarded to DofE volunteers in the country.

Mrs Winterflood commented,

“This year AKS students have done exceptionally well with over 100 Awards being completed at Bronze, Silver and Gold level and all during a pandemic.

The students have shown tremendous commitment and self-discipline in completing the sections of volunteering, skill and physical recreation, often doing all these at home. Helping the elderly, cooking or playing musical instruments, running or cycling using Strava apps to upload evidence have been popular activities this year. Thanks must go not only to the parents for supporting their children in these activities but also to Mr Riches and the many staff DofE volunteers in school, who help with the administration of the edofe online accounts and on the expeditions. For most students the expedition was the highlight of their Award, as it was often the first time they had been away from their families with their friends since before lockdown. Their enthusiasm, obvious enjoyment of the walking and camping and pleasant demeanour make helping the Award very worth-while and I feel very honoured to receive the coin.”
