It was a festival of netball at AKS as the girls took to the courts for the annual House Netball Competitions. The Year 8 , 9 & 10 tournaments proved to be as competitive as ever with Gawthorpe coming out on top in two of the three competitions with Rufford winning the third. With every pupil taking part and representing their House it was a real ‘team’ effort and the competition was fierce as they fought for top honours.
The Year 10 tournament saw two houses battle out for top spot and the final match of the tournament saw the teams matched against each other. Both came into the game undefeated and the game was as close as expected. Gawthorpe took an early lead with school team players Sally D and Sophie B linking well to move the ball into the circle and new found shooter Lucy R converted well. Not to be outdone team shooter Ellie B kept the score ticking along for Salmesbury and at the break there was just two goals between the teams. The second half saw Gawthorpe raise the accuracy of their passing and they slowly edged further ahead. Great defending from Salmesbury’s Emily P and Farrah D made it difficult for Gawthorpe to find space in the circle but at the final whistle they had kept ahead and with the win clinched the House title. Leighton claimed 3rd spot just ahead of Rufford.
Gawthorpe made it a winning double when they also claimed the Year 9 tournament. With 19 girls attending the school netball club team players were evident in all the teams and there was some superb netball played by all houses. All the matches were closely contested with some games being decided by the odd goal but at the end of the tournament Gawthorpe finished just ahead of Rufford with Leighton in 3rd spot.
The Year 8 tournament saw different winners with Rufford and Leighton going one better to claim top spot and the runners up spot respectively. Once again lots of team players were spread across all the Houses teams and there were many close games.
At the end of an action packed week of netball all the girls had enjoyed competing for their House and all had both played some excellent netball and improved as the games progresses.
AKS now look forward to more competitive matches in 2018 against opposition on the Fylde Coast and further a field in Lancashire.
