AKS Year 10 Netball team played in the Fylde & Wyre U15 netball tournament and after some excellent group matches had to settle for 3rd spot despite defeating eventual winners Millfield in their group match.
The team got off to a slow start in their first group match against Cardinal Allen and our play was scrappy and inaccurate but the team slowly gained more composure and accuracy in their play and came out deserved winners 7-1. The second match saw us against Carr Hill and once again we lacked accuracy and rhythm in the early stages but accurate shooting from Captain Ellie S and Ruby W converted the chances we created and we again won 10 -3 . St. Bedes were our next opposition and once again we started slowly and frequently lost possession allowing St.Bedes to create scoring opportunities but good defending by Amelia C and Mia W always put pressure on the shooters and they failed to score. Again accurate shooting by Ellie S converted our chances and at the final whistle it was another win, 7-0. The final group game was our toughest test against eventual winners Millfield. Their fast accurate netball saw them take the lead early on. This saw us under pressure for the first time and we raised our game and played our best netball of the day to match Millfield and then go into the lead. Great dodging and accurate passing from centre court players Hannah T, Tara W, Anna H and Grace S saw us play some great netball and pass the ball down court effectively. Great defending from Amelia C and Mia W thwarted many Millfield attacks and with Ellie S and Ruby W’s superb conversion rate we recorded another win 10-5 and with four wins we topped the group to go into the semi final as group winners.
In the semi-final we faced a very tall and imposing Garstang side who worked hard and went into an early lead. Despite this we enjoyed a lot of possession but too often threw the ball away before we entered into the scoring circle and at half time we were 2-4 behind. With time short, panic started to set in and our play became rushed while Garstang played high passes to their very tall players, which proved effective and so they edged further ahead. At the final whistle the score was 8-3 to Garstang and we were rueing a missed opportunity as we failed to play our best netball when it counted in the semi- final and had to settle for 3rd spot.
Garstang progressed into the final where they met Millfield who we had beaten in our group match. After a very close game which required extra time and then golden goal Millfield were crowned champions.
