Superb Sports Celebration Evening

Superb Sports Celebration Evening

The climax of the sporting year at AKS was the second Sports Celebration Evening which proved to be a great success thanks to Olympic Gold Medalist Jason Gardner one of the UK’s all time great sprinters who attended to present the awards, give an inspirational speech and of course show his Olympic Gold Medal to our sporty youngsters.

Jason Gardener achieved one of his ultimate ambitions at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games by winning Gold in the men’s 4x100m relay. Earlier that year he became World Indoor Champion over 60m and is winner of four European Indoor championship titles over 60 meters and is a Commonwealth Games Champion for the 4x100m relay. He is a member of the very select sub 10 second club for 100m with a personal best of 9.98 seconds and he was awarded an MBE for services to athletics.

Mr Phil Hayden welcomed Jason and all the guests and the pupils presented a superb video of their highlights that gave a brief overview of another tremendous year on the sports field for AKS in a wide range of sports from rugby to table tennis and hockey to rounders. Many team successes at local and regional level as well as individual international honours for present and past pupils once again reflected the tremendous opportunities and success enjoyed by pupils at AKS over the past year.

Year 7 pupils Olivia Merrick, Maddison Betmead , Georgina Bamber , Reece Godfrey and Noah Morris spoke superbly to give a flavour of their first sporting year at AKS and how much they had enjoyed all the activities on offer. Senior pupils Charlie Cadley and Georgia Wood Wareing spoke of the lifelong friends they have gained and the many lessons learnt from being involved in sport during their years at AKS.

After the eloquent speeches Jason presented awards to all the different winter and summer sports ‘Players of the Season’ and ‘Most Improved Players’ and there were big smiles and hearty congratulations as the pupils went on stage for  the opportunity to receive their awards and shake hands with an Olympic Gold Medallist. Presentations were also made to the pupils in each year who had made the greatest contribution to school sport and to the junior pupils who had contributed to the most successful ever year for our younger pupils. The final presentations were fittingly made to AKS’s senior pupils who had contributed so much to the sporting life of the school in the 6th Form.

After the awards Jason gave an inspirational address in which she spoke with great passion to inspire everyone in the room. His personal story of his athletics achievements was inspiring, truthful and entertaining and gave a revealing and honest insight into the trials and tribulations of elite sport at the highest level. His key messages of getting the most from the talent you have, overcoming barriers, learning from mistakes, seizing opportunities and the value of hard work will be key messages for all the pupils to take forward.

The evening finished with everyone, pupils and staff alike, taking the opportunity to hold, wear and have their picture taken with an Olympic Gold Athletics Medal and Jason and overall everyone agreed it was another inspirational celebration of all that’s good in AKS Sport .
