Great hockey against Stockport Grammar

It was another superb Saturday morning of hockey for AKS as 7 teams played matches against the traditionally strong Stockport Grammar with four teams winning and an exciting last minute winner for the U15's..
AKS 1st XI  0  -  1  Stockport 1stXI    POM Cally B

Stockport started strongly in the 1st X1 game and scored the only goal of the game after five minutes from a penalty corner strike. AKS worked hard to get back in the game with Grace W and Farrah D driving through from midfield to set up goal scoring opportunities throughout the game which were thwarted by the strong Stockport defence. The second half saw AKS defend well under pressure and keeper Emily P made a number of outstanding saves as well as closing players down quickly forcing them to shoot wide. Stockport came close to scoring again and a goalmouth scramble saw Amy F clear the ball off the AKS goal line. AKS continued to work hard with Jade F and Sophie B tackling well and closing play down and Lily H clearing the ball wide out of defence. The last ten minutes saw AKS attack strongly to try to level  the score and they were unlucky when a fine through pass from Grace W almost put Sally S through on goal. It was good to see the return of captain Lily H after illness. Player of the match was Cally B for her overall defending skills, especially her marking and tackling which were excellent.

AKS U15 XI  2  -  1  Stockport U15XI  Scorer: Ruby W Hannah T  POM Ruby W & Hannah T

This was the most exciting game of the season with the team playing their best hockey so far and snatching a deserved victory in the last 30 seconds! We started well and were positive from the first whistle with Captain Ruby W linking well with Ellie S up front to create a number of scoring chances in the first five minutes of the game. Ruby W came close to scoring herself in the 13th minute when a great run from Ellie S saw her beat the defence and pass to Ruby whose shot flew just wide. Stockport were always dangerous and in the 22nd minute we were grateful that a well worked move saw their shot deflect off both posts and go wide! Stockport then enjoyed a period of pressure and only great defending from Anna H, Amy S, Charlotte A and Sydney G together with a great save from Tara W kept the ball out of the net. Before the break we went close with the best passing move of the half when a pass out of defence from Anna H found Mia W in midfield , she passed on to Ruby W whose surging run took her past the Stockport defence and her perfect pass found Ellie S infront of goal but her shot fly over the crossbar and we went into half time level at 0 – 0.

Lifted by our superb first half performance we started the second half well and Prisha R went close in the third minute but it was Stockport who scored first against the run of play after a piece of superb individual skill by the Stockport midfielder. Going behind spurred us to work even harder with Hannah T, Emily T and Mia W linking attack and defence well and we got our rewards when Ruby W converted a well worked corner routine to deservedly draw us level minutes later. We continued to put the Stockport defence under pressure, pressing hit outs superbly and with time running out superb hassling by Ruby W saw her win the ball back, drive forward and pass to Ellie S whose shot was well saved by the Stockport keeper but when the ball fell to Hannah T on the edge of the circle she found the corner of the goal to snatch a deserved victory with seconds remaining. Overall the whole team contributed to this superb win playing impressive passing hockey and working hard in both attack and defence. Ruby W was named Player of the Match for her superb dynamic running up front and Hannah T for her constant running throughout the game and her winning goal.

AKS U14st XI    1  - 6  Stockport U14XI  Scorers: Ziv W  POM Abigail F & Eva E

The under 14 fixture against a very strong Stockport side was always going to be a tough mornings hockey. Injuries and availability allowed for Holly C to make her debut this season and the under 14s had to show great versatility and adapt to new positions throughout the game. Although AKS showed great promise and attacked from the whistle Stockport caught the new formed defence off guard to go 1-0 up early on. Stockport continued to put us under pressure but a breakaway run from Freya W and Ziv Wilson saw AKS awarded a penalty corner which saw the straight strike saved by the Stockport keeper and the rebound shot went wide. Stockport raised their game again and scored two quick goals to go three up.

Good passing hockey from Stockport saw AKS struggle to keep the ball out of there defending circle but great penalty corner defence saw Eleanor L deflect the ball wide of the post. Despite the score line AKS continued to attack and Alicia I worked hard to distribute the ball to allow AKS back into the attacking circle and a fantastic cross from Freya W found Ziv W in the circle and her great shot found the back of the net to make it 1 – 3. Despite more fantastic defending by a now more organised back line, led by Captain Eleanor L and with Abigail F sweeping at the back, the strong Stockport team continued to find the back of the net. Eva E in goal made some fantastic saves but the end score of 1-6 saw a good win to Stockport. Players of the match were Abigail F and Eva E.
AKS U13 A VII   1  - 0  Stockport U13 A VII     Scorers:      POM Olivia Merrick

AKS U13 A team enjoyed a narrow victory in a close fought match. With both teams evenly matched and playing some good hockey it took just one goal to seal the win and great defending from Olivia M and goalkeeping from Mady R maintained the team’s impressive record of not conceding a single goal all season. Olivia merrick was named as Player of the Match.

The U13 B team also had a close game but they were on the losing end of a 0-1 scoreline.

AKS U12 A VII   6  - 0  Stockport U12 A VII     Scorers: Charlotte T(3) Carley W (2)      POM: Charlotte T

The U12’s got off to a great start with Charlotte T giving them an early lead with a shot from the edge of the circle. AKS increased their lead with a goal from Carly W who ran into the circle to sneak a goal past the keeper after a well timed pass from Eleanor C. A superb individual run and edge of circle shot from Charlotte T made it 3-0 and a strong penalty corner strike from Carly W gave AKS a comfortable 4-0 lead at half time. Stockport defended better in the second half and the game was more even, but the AKS defence always looked in control with AKS sweeper Lisa P tackling and clearing effectively as well as having a number of runs forward herself. Jessica A and Eleanor C were rarely beaten in defence and overlapped well to set up chances for the forwards and Evie F and Hollie W both had shots at goal. The only goal of the half was a fine one/two move between Carly W and Charlotte T which resulted in a goal for Charlotte. Player of the match was midfield dynamo and hatrick scorer Charlotte Thomson.

AKS U12 B VII   2  - 1  Stockport U12 B VII  Scorers: Holly W,Alexa M  POM Maisie R & Anna W

There were good individual performances from the U12B team in their end to end game against Stockport. AKS were on top in the first half with Anna W, Holly W and Katie S continually putting pressure on the opposition with their tireless running and closing down of the opposition to win the ball back. Holly W gave AKS a 1-0 lead before half time with a fine shot into the corner of the goal. A much more even second half saw the defence put under pressure but superb tackling from sweeper Pryanka R and defenders Sophie W and Lily D and four crucial saves by keeper Maisy R prevented them capitalising from the pressure. A clearance out of defence by Holly B led to AKS increasing their lead mid way through the half when Alexa M pounced onto a pass from Katie S to score a welcome second goal. Stockport continued to pile on the pressure to score a well deserved consolation goal at the end of the game. The final score was 2-1 to AKS and Anna W and Maisy R were the players of the match.
