As tennis starts on the grass courts at Wimbledon, the AKS Road to Wimbledon Championships came to a close as once again this year the schools grass courts played hosts to the finals and were blessed with true tennis weather of blue skies and sunshine.
Yet another fantastic tennis season at AKS was finished off with the very popular and ever growing AKS Road to Wimbledon Annual Tennis Tournament with over a 100 competitors, boys and girls from Y7-10 and over a 100 matches, in singles, doubles or mixed doubles events. This year has also seen the introduction of the Y7 Girls Singles Plate tournament due to the large number of girls wishing to take part in the competition. Many matches took place throughout the summer term and the pupils get more out of this tournament than tennis alone, as they take charge of organising and officiating their own matches.
In all the finals every pupil raised their game and some outstanding tennis was played in all the closely contested matches. The Year 7 pupils, experiencing the school ‘Wimbledon’ for the first time coped well with the low bounce characteristic of grass courts and talented player Laura K proved too strong for Lucy B to lift the girls’ crown. Laura made it a winning double pairing up with Olivia M to win the doubles against Patsy C and Beth R. In the boys event Jeremy N triumphed in both the singles and doubles.
In the Year 8 boys James J retained the title he won last year, defeating James W, and once again he teamed up with James W to retain the doubles title. Gabriella F won the Year 8 singles by defeating Prisha R and she too joined Prisha to defeat Liberty D and Eleanor L in the double final.
All the Year 9 matches saw some hard hitting tennis with lots of closely fought points and games. Ruby W made it a treble winning year as she defeated Ellie S in the Year 9 singles final while Ellie collected the winner’s trophy in the doubles teaming up with Hannah T to defeat Ruby W and Emily T. Josh Z avenged his defeat of last year winning the Year 9 singles title against John B but John won the Doubles and mixed doubles titles with Morgan D and Ellie W respectively.
Year 10 Malika D collected the singles and mixed doubles titles with Roan Z going one better lifting three titles singles, doubles with Oliver K and mixed doubles with Malika.
It would not be Wimbledon without the traditional strawberries and cream and the enthusiastic Year 7 Ball Girls who did a tremendous job today, assisting all players and creating the tunnel for the presentation.A superb morning of tennis with all finalists receiving trophies from retiring Deputy Headteacher and tennis enthusiast Mrs Judith Cooper before tucking in to strawberries and cream to finish the AKS Wimbledon Finals in style.
