Great morning of hockey against Queens School , Chester
Saturday saw AKS travel to Chester where they enjoyed three competitive and close fought matches against Queens School.
A combined U15/14 side faced the talented Queens U15 side who were quick off the mark and they attacked at pace from the first whistle but great team defending kept the scores level. Having weathered the storm we gained in confidence and started to attack down the right at pace winning two corners but good Queens’s defence kept the ball out of the net. With both teams playing great passing hockey we went ahead with a superb goal in the 12th minute. Great pressing saw us win the ball in midfield and good early passing saw Prisha find Ziv free in the circle and a great first time shot flew past the on rushing keeper. Queens boasted a number of quick, skilful players and were always a threat but their equalizing goal was a little lucky as a shot deflected off an AKS defenders stick to give Beth in goal no chance and the half time score was 1 – 1. The second half again saw great hockey from both sides. Beth made some great saves to keep the scores level and Ellie made crucial tackles at the back but Queens scored in the 9th minute to take a slender lead. More good passing hockey with Alicia, Olivia and Prisha dominating down the right saw us create a number of chances but it was Queens who found the net again before the final whistle. Player of the Match was Beth for some superb saves in her first full game in goal.
AKS U13’s played their toughest match off the season against a strong Queens Chester U14A side. The squad were put under pressure from the onset but rose to the challenge admirably. Great linking play and intelligent passing set up Carly to score 2 well executed and competent goals. Queen’s fast and accurate attacking play placed AKS under pressure and on the back foot. This chase caused gaps to be formed and AKS struggled to mark effectively. It certainly gave player of the match Dani lots to do in goal but she also stepped up her game and made many crucial saves and clearances. AKS U13's determination and competitive spirit was evident with a 2-2 score at half time. However, AKS were caught sleeping in the first 20 seconds of the second half and Queens ran straight through the centre of the pitch to score. Although AKS battled hard and created some good scoring opportunities the score remained 3-2 to Queens Chester. The U13 girls should be proud of their efforts and reflect and learn from their performance; how to deal with pressurised situations, the need to mark tightly in defence and to meet the ball to beat the opposition. Well done girls, a great achievement.
A combined AKS U14/13 team faced Queens U14 B team and were soon behind when in only the second minute poor marking saw a free player infront of goal give Madi no chance and Queens went 1 – 0 ahead. AKS then woke up and started to pass the ball well to win a corner which Anna coolly slotted home to draw us level at 1 – 1. Lifted by the goal and a greater work rate from all the team we took the lead when Carys scored from another corner to make it 2 -1. We then started to play good passing hockey dominating down the right and putting Queens under constant pressure and further goals from Kate, Carys and Anna saw the half time score 5 -2. After the break Queens did enjoy some possession but good defending from Esme and saves from Scarlet kept the ball out of the net and with Carys scoring her hat-trick goal and Beth also getting on the scoresheet the final score was 7 – 2.Player of the Match was Carys for hat-trick and superb work rate.
