AKS Boys Hockey off to a Positive Start
Since returning to school in September, AKS Lytham have introduced a further element to our sporting provision with the development of our boys hockey club. Sessions are now held every Friday after school and in the first three weeks, we have had well over 40 boys attend across Yr. 7 - 11. In conjuction with this, boys hocket is now being taught as a 6 week block within their PE lessons in order to develop a sound understanding of the basics, rules and regulations.
The first competitive fixtures for this fledgling club saw 12 of our boys represent AKS at an U13 Invitational tournament on Thursday, aiming to represent our school well against some very competitive, well-established 'hockey schools'. Led by a few players with club experience, our team comprised mostly of first-timers who enjoy sport and are taking the opportunity to develop their sporting interests and talents. The 7-a-side tournament saw us play five matches of twenty minutes each, allowing players to be rested and rotated through different positions. Our players showed an excellent attitude and skill level and adapted well in what, for some, was their first taste of competitive hockey. Lead well by James D and Harry B, the team was able to gain scoring opportunities and press our opponents well in defense. We were fortunate enough that Cameron M of year 9 was able to play and was the standout goalkeeper of the day. Several players had an excellent start to their AKS Hockey careers including Toby C in Yr. 8, and Tommy M and Angus C both in Yr. 7. Though the scoreboard read 1 win, 1 tie, 2 losses, the AKS team gained so many positive comments from our opponents about both our competitive play and our sportsmanship. All players should be very proud of their efforts.
As we progress through this term we will be sourcing friendly fixtures to ensure our boys continue to develop, with the intention of our U13's, U14's and U16's taking part in their respective Lancashire cup competitons which commence after Christmas.
