1st XI v MCC – 25 April 2019
AKS 1st XI hosted the prestigious MCC on 25 April with a side made up of several players that had played first class county cricket and a number of club professionals.
With the school inviting the MCC to bat first some sharp fielding supported the bowling attack well, as AKS dismissed the opener in the fourth over off the bowling of Harrison, the MCC worked the field well with the next wicket falling with the score on 73. Unfortunately, the brief breaks for rain had little effect on the quality batsmen as the MCC totalled 232 for 3 with James (41) and Dan (46 not out) supporting opener Jack (112 not out) in a fine innings. Six bowlers were used, with Morgan and Curtis picking up the other wickets.
Set 232 for 3, AKS certainly had a tough ask to chase down the total. A resolute start saw Kasim and Morgan remain unbeaten at tea, before the first wicket fell at 36, immediately followed by Harrison, stumped off the next ball. A significant dismissal followed as the Kasim and Ali’s family communication system failed, as Kasim was run out for 37 in an innings that was both impressive and controlled until that point.
Tristan and Ali then steadied the ship with some fine shot making, before Tristan mistimed a drive and was caught at midwicket for 19. Panic then seemed to ensue, as AKS struggled to deal with the leg spin of Joe who finished with 4-15. Despite Jerome and George putting in a fight for the final wicket, the rain came just 10 minutes too late to save the draw as AKS were bowled out 92.
The event was a great success, with Kasim being presented the MCC ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award for his overall performance with the bat and ball. The MCC were also extremely complimentary of both the facilities and AKS Hospitality, commenting that it is the best they get at any of the MCC fixtures.
