Year 7 hockey win again against Altrincham

It was yet another superb Saturday morning of hockey as AKS enjoyed some very competitive games against a strong Altrincham Girls Grammar School with the U12’s winning again.

AKS U16 XI    0 - 2 Altrincham U16XI       POM Farrah D & Hannah T

AKS U16 team enjoyed a close match against a strong Altrincham side and their superb second half performance deserved more out of the game. With players taking time to get used to each other we started slowly and Altrincham capitalised winning a corner in only the second minute. Our corner defence was immediately put to the test but great defending saw us keep the ball out and the scores remained level. Altrincham continued to attack at pace but good defending from Anna H, Amy S, Charlotte A and Kiera B thwarted their efforts. Farrah D, Sophie B and Hannah T dominated midfield but just failed to connect with forwards ahead of them and an Altrincham counter attack saw them win a second corner in the 7th minute. A lucky deflection at the corner saw the ball find the back of the net to take Altrincham into the lead. We then started to play with more purpose and we enjoyed a good period of possession with Farrah D linking well with Hannah T on the right and we came close to equalising when Hannah put in an excellent cross but it just failed to find a forward.

Ruby W again worked hard up front closing down the Altrincham back players with great effect and in the 16th minute she stole the ball and drove into the circle and was disappointed saw her great shot saved by the keeper. Despite our attacking intent and greater possession towards the break it was Altrincham who were next to find the net when we conceded a soft goal just before half time and we went into the break at 0-2.

Lifted by our improved play we began the second half well and started to play a more fluid, passing game. More great defending at the back saw Anna H won the ball back constantly and with good link play between Kiera B, Hannah T and Nyah H on the right we started to dominate. We created several scoring chances the best of which saw Ellie S bring another good save from the Altrincham keeper. Altrincham were always a threat going forwards but Emily T, in an unfamiliar defensive position, marked well and Emily P made several good saves to keep the ball out. Ruby W went close again before the end and after a half of excellent passing hockey and being the better team we deserved the reward of a goal but at the final whistle the score remained at 0-2 and we had to take satisfaction from a superb performance rather than a win! Players of the match were Farah D and Hannah T for their excellent work rate throughout the game.

AKS U14XI  0  - 3 Altrincham U14XI              POM Alicia I

A combined U14/U13 side played a strong Altrincham side and were immediately under pressure from the fast skilful opposition. Our slow start with everyone getting used to playing together allowed Altrincham to dominate possession and only tenacious defending by everyone kept the ball out of the net. Eventually the pressure told and Altrincham scored to make it 1 – 0 before the break. Another came in the second period despite more good defending from player of the match Alicia I and good goalkeeping from Mady R. A third goal came before the final whistle to make it a 3 – 0 victory for Altrincham.

AKS U12AVII  4  -  1 Altrincham U13AVII  Scorers: Charlotte T(2) Jessie A (2) POM : Jessie A

A stronger game for the U12A’s against an Altrincham U13A side  made the team have to work hard against older and physically stronger opposition with goalkeeper Daniella H being tested from the start. Despite this, the team soon settled and took the lead within ten minutes when Charlotte T broke through to score with an unstoppable shot from the edge of the circle. Good team play on the right between Eleanor C and Carly W led to a penalty corner which Charlotte T deflected in from a Carly W shot. Altrincham came back to score after a mix up in the AKS defence led to the opposition centre having a clear run at goal. Undaunted, an exciting spell at the end of the half saw Jessie A hit the post and force the opposition keeper to make a superb save with her hand before her luck changed and she scored to make it 3-1 at half time.

The second half saw both teams have chances with Charlotte T, Carly W and Jessie A all forcing the opposition keeper to make saves while at the other end Daniella H made some good clearing the ball strongly to take the pressure off the defence. AKS defended well throughout the game with Jessica A using her ever improving skills to thwart any attacks on the left and Eleanor C tackling strongly on the right. Pryanka R intercepted and distributed the ball effectively at the back while Anna W gave a feisty performance closing the opposition down to regain possession with her nonstop running. The only goal of the half came from Jessie A who scored with an instinctive first time shot into the roof of the net.

It was a very pleasing team performance and playing against a physically stronger side did not deter them, especially Carly W, who came off with a few more cuts and bruises than usual. The opposition chose Jessica A as player of the match with a great team performance leading to a 4-1 AKS victory.

AKS U12BVIII  1 – 2 Altrincham U13BVII Scorers: Holly W  POM: Holly W

What a fantastic game our U12B team had a against a strong Altrincham team. It was an end to end game with both teams having chances and at half time Altrincham lead 2-0. Some wise words from Maisie M helped put the team back out in a very positive frame of mind. In the second half Hollie W scored a well-deserved goal, but the AKS team just could not get the equaliser.

Maisy R had to be on her toes in goal and made some fantastic saves. Katie S marshalled the team from the back as sweeper, taking quick hit outs and making crucial tackles to help keep the score to 1-2. Lilly D and Alexa M never stopped chasing and putting pressure on the opposition. Holly B was skillful and set up goal scoring opportunities. Lily F pounced on any pass and showed her pace driving forwards with the ball. Sophie W and Kate R worked hard getting the ball out of defence and then chasing forwards for the entire game. Hollie W demonstrated her skills by some delightful runs and powerful shots and was unlucky not to get more than one goal. Her skill, grit and determination won her the player of the match award.

A special mention and huge thanks to Maisie M who travelled with the team and was on the sidelines helping to coach and give team talks.
