U15 Hockey defeat Rossall

AKS U15 hockey team faced a rematch against Rossall School and after a close fought game again came out on top with a 3-1 win.

The start of the game was even with both teams enjoying periods of pressure and attacking at pace. Rossall’s talented midfield player attacked at pace but good marking from Kiera B, Daya M and Sydney G restricted her passing options and enabled us to regain possession. Captain Ruby W led from the front with her excellent closing down and hassling of defenders and great link play from Hannah T, Emily T and Charlotte A in midfield enabled us to create a number of scoring opportunities but the final shot just failed to find the target. The deadlock was finally broken when we found the net after a great passing move. Our lead wasn’t to last for long however as Rossall got back on even terms minutes later when a cross into the circle found a free player and she made no mistake in finding the corner of the goal to make it 1-1. Rossall then enjoyed a period of pressure and only great goalkeeping from Eva E and more good defending kept the scores level.

The second half again saw Rossall start well and attack at pace. Eleanor L made some crucial interceptions in the middle of the pitch and Alicia I marked well in defence to ensure we regained possession. We slowly started to pass the ball more effectively and dominate possession to win a corner and from this a great strike from Ruby W took us into a well deserved lead 2-1.

Now playing with more confidence we started to move the ball well with Anna H switching the ball round the back effectively to set up attacks down our right side where Amy M- N and Nyah H worked well together. More excellent forward play from Ruby W and Ellie S constantly put the Rossall defence under pressure and only several good saves from the Rossall keeper kept the ball out of the net. Rossall were always dangerous and again only brave goalkeeping from Eva E to come out and meet an onrushing Rossall forward kept our lead intact. After some end to end play we sealed the game with a third goal late in the game when Ruby W got her second of the game to make the score 3-1. Emily T had her best game of the season in midfield but Player of the Match was Charlotte A for her nonstop running in an unusual role in midfield which nullified the effectiveness of Rossall’s talented Performance Centre midfielder.
