The Space and Astronomy Centre Visit

Year 5

On Monday, Year five rounded off their Space topic with a visit to The Space and Astronomy Centre, located at Rossall School. Nick Lister (the resident astronomer) has taught this subject for over 25 years, and was a brilliant source of information, answering many really tricky questions posed by the children - What would happen if you fell in to a black hole? How far away are the stars? What's it like on Venus?

The children got to enter a planetarium, where they sat on beanbags in the dark, as their eyes became accustomed to the darkness a wonderful display of the night sky appeared. Nick identified several constellations and gave us the name of some of the stars; Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Polaris and Sirius.

Later in the day we sat in a university-style lecture hall and found out about each of the planets in our solar system. The children were wonderfully behaved and showed, not only a great depth of prior knowledge, but a willingness to learn about this fascinating subject.  Well done everyone!
