My first half term in Sixth Form - a student perspective by Meghna

My name is Meghna and I’m in year 12. I am studying biology, chemistry and maths, and hope to study medicine at university.

It feels like yesterday when I walked through the Sixth Form entrance for the first time, and yet 6 weeks have already passed since the start of term! Sixth Form is, as expected, a step-up from senior school, with greater emphasis being placed on independent study, but the pre-A Level courses offered by school during lockdown have definitely helped to bridge the gap and make the transition easier.

I am really enjoying A-Levels, with all my lessons being interactive and engaging, and my teachers are amazing – they make the most difficult of concepts (which there are a lot of at A-Level!) easy to understand, catering to all learning styles. Our small class sizes also allow the teachers to spend more time helping us individually, which I have found to be incredibly helpful.

There are so many aspects of Sixth Form that I enjoy, for example having the common room as a place to study during free periods, and a sense of individuality in our uniform. However, my favourite part of life as a sixth former would be the range of extracurricular activities that you can throw yourself into. I am part of VENT, AKS Action and Student Council, and I am also a member of ‘That’s a Wrap’ - a Tycoons group of L6 students selling homemade Christmas hampers to raise money for ECPAT International. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this if it weren’t for the more flexible timetable, allowing us to use our time productively to balance schoolwork and our other commitments.

Overall, Sixth Form has been a wonderful experience so far, and I can’t wait to discover the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead!
