England netballer Natalie Panagarry joins AKS for first ‘virtual’ Sports Award Presentation
At AKS the end of the school year usually heralds the Annual Sports Presentation Evening but in this very unusual year it is another event that has not been able to take place in its normal format. The school, however, were determined to acknowledge the achievements of its pupils and teams in the winter sports before the lockdown and so organised a ‘virtual’ Sports Award Presentation.
Director of Sport Mr Mark Walmsley opened the awards presentation by congratulating not just the award winners but all the pupils who regularly played in all the school teams. He acknowledged the passion, resilience, development and dedication of all the pupils and thanked them for giving up their time to represent the school so superbly in the many sporting fixtures that did take place before lockdown.
Previous years have seen sporting stars like Olympic Gold Medal winning hockey player Kate Richardson-Walsh, Olympic sprinter Jason Gardner and welsh international and British Lions rugby legend John Bevan attend to inspire the pupils and this year was no different as on the back of representing England at the recent World Cup held in Liverpool England and Loughborough Lightening netballer and ex Arnold pupil Natalie Panagarry gave an address to congratulate and encourage all the school’s sporty youngsters. Natalie highlighted her sporting experience at school as playing a vital role in building her confidence and social skills as well as her resilience and ability to juggle her academic work and sport. She congratulated all the award winners and everyone who had played over the season and encouraged all the pupils to try new things and take every opportunity open to them while at school.
Miss DeMiranda not only congratulated the hockey award winners but also said that the hockey club is thriving thanks to the commitment, dedication and unbounding enthusiasm to learn from the large number of girls who regularly take to the field each week. Important life skills and values are regularly on display on the training ground and in matches.
Key highlights of the hockey season were the launch of the boys hockey club, the girls U11 , U12A and U13B teams remaining unbeaten all season and adding 9 trophies to the trophy cabinet with the Girls U11, U13A, U13B, and U14 teams all being crowned Lancashire Champions. 3 teams reached Regional finals, U11, U13 and U14 and the U11 and 13 teams both went further in reaching the North of England finals having both won their respective Lancashire County and Regional finals.
Individually 21 pupils selected to represent Lancashire, Beth R and Lucy B were selected to attend the England Hockey Performance Centre whilst Laura K, Olivia M & Charlotte T were selected to attend two Play Days run by the Fylde Performance Centre .
Rebecca W and former pupil Emily P were members of the U18 North team that won the England Hockey Futures cup competition, and Rebecca was also selected as a member of the England U18 Training Squad .
Miss DeMiranda said ” Finally, a thank you to the band of supporters that regularly brave the weather conditions to come and support you and the staff come rain or shine. And also to the staff whose commitment and guidance to give the AKS pupils the best sporting experiences they can, in a cheerful and focussed manner”.
Mr Holmes led the rugby presentation. An incredible 76 fixtures were played with over 160 pupils taking to the field during the season. Highlights were the senior side reaching the finals of the Lancashire Vase and the U14 side losing only one game all season. The U13 team attended the Lancashire County Festival and with some great wins finished in a creditable 5th place and especially pleasing was that they were commended for their creativity and style of play. It was fantastic to see U12 A & B teams taking to the field every Saturday and the future certainly looks bright on the rugby field at AKS. There was also individual success with a number of boys gaining Lancashire selection and Tristan W being honoured by being named as Lancashire U16 captain. A number of players were also selected to train as part of the Sale Sharks development pathway.
Mrs Roberts led the netball awards which highlighted the success of the Year 11 netball team who made it a league treble winning the Fylde & Wyre South League for the third year in a row, winning all their league matches. They also proved themselves to be the top team on the Fylde Coast winning the Fylde & Wyre U16 tournament after a superb display of controlled netball. The Year 9 A team also were crowned league champions with the B team picking up tournament winners medals. There were also tournament runners-up medals for the Yr 7 A & B team and the Year 8 B team.
Finally Mr Moretti announced the football awards. Highlight of the season for the U11 team was their tour to Manchester which not only saw them play some exciting matches but also visit the training grounds of both Manchester City and Manchester United and but also meet United star player Marcus Rashford. Large number of boys enjoyed weekly fixtures with some epic matches for all teams.
Overall a very different Sports Award Presentation but an opportunity to celebrate the many AKS sporting successes and the school looks forward to many more in the future. The four individual sports video presentations of the Awards can be found on @AKSSport Twitter feed.
