Tycoons in Schools - AKS Idozi group tops national leaderboard for ROI

AKS has now competed in the national enterprise competition for five years

Tycoons in Schools - 2019/20 Interim Report

The ‘Dragons Den’ (aka Ladies Luncheon Club) grilling is a distant but vivid memory. The staff of the DT department have been thanked for their professional cutting services.   The production line (often a patient parent’s kitchen table) has fallen silent. Trading stands have been set up and taken down for the last time, accounts have been balanced and the final profits have been banked.

This year's Tycoons groups funded by Peter Jones, have completed their 8-week stint in forming and running their own enterprises. For the fifth year in succession an AKS group has topped the national leader board in terms of return on investment.

Idozi a remarkably creative business that took broken and unloved jewellery and turned into upcycled earrings achieved a return of 4990% and a profit of just under £800. All profits will be split between Children Today and Prostate Cancer UK. The highlight of their trading was a customer seeing how her donation of a broken necklace turned in to a range of earrings. They showed great teamwork, focus and a very impressive drive in producing and marketing their products. A superb business and fingers crossed to see if they make the international final.

Idozi was closely followed into second place by the Scented Snowman Co., whose charming wooden designs were matched by their sales techniques. This group were quick to adapt when presented with design and production problems and produced their best range of products at the PTA Christmas Fayre. A return of 1334% and profit well over £500 which will go to Brian House Hospice. This continues the close links between the hospice and Tycoons, indeed, the last 3 years have seen profit donations rise to a figure of over £4600.

Finally, a Stitch in Times, a social project working with Just Good Friends and a youth group for autistic children; producing hand crafted Christmas decorations. They provided mini projects and group activities for the two charities, whilst not matching the other groups profits, they developed some very valuable skills in logistics and organisation. Certainly, the value of tackling loneliness amongst the elderly in our community cannot be measured.

AKS has now competed in the national enterprise competition for five years, winning once and being runners up on three occasions. Receiving this recognition is fully deserved but the skills and charity aspect gained from running a business are more worthwhile. Members of Year 11 – future Tycoons are already looking forward to following this hugely successful legacy.
