Biology at Work

Our trip to ThermoFisher in Warrington brought a new light to biology within the workplace on an industrial scale; giving us experience in the day-to-day lives of specialists in the field of DNA and forensic testing.  We were involved in multiple procedures which were commonplace at ThermoFisher, such as wearing cleanroom gowning to remove any human contamination at the site and witnessing the multiple production processes used to make the high-precision products.  It was incredibly interesting to see such an alien workplace, with equipment within the realm of sci-fi; with every challenge they faced being overcome by intense procedures and the rapid development of new technologies.

We used some of their forensic technology first-hand, such as using gel electrophoresis technology to make a genetic fingerprint and using allele frequency spectra to identify the killer in a mock crime scene, which was very interesting.

Overall, our trip to ThermoFisher was an enriching one, allowing us to experience biology at an industrial level through a renowned company that excels at furthering biology for the world.
