"AKS Sixth Form reflects modern needs and aspirations"
How AKS sixth form gives students a competitive advantage
The theme of tonight's Sixth Form Open Evening was how we give students a competitive advantage in a changing world. New Headmaster, Mr David Harrow, welcomed a full hall of parents and students in his opening address. He explained how individual disciplines will not be enough to thrive in an increasingly complex world; how it will not be knowledge per se that counts, but what we do with that knowledge; how the higher-order cognitive skills identified by the World Economic Forum will be essential in order to thrive in a world with an unprecendented scale and pace of change; and in particular, how Emotional Intelligence is sought by employers.
Understanding this context is critical in ensuring that we deliver a Sixth Form education that opens minds and opens doors. The lasting impact of personal growth and experiences gained contributes to the exemplary academic education provided which together result in our impressive track record:
Over the past five years, 51% of GCSE exams taken at AKS were awarded grades 9-7/A*; 60% of all A-level grades were A*, A or B, and over a third were A*/A.
After hearing from the Headmaster, Mr Kevin Maund, Head of AKS Sixth Form, spoke about life in AKS Sixth Form and introduced a panel of current Sixth Formers to answer questions from the floor. He shared the university destinations from last year's Sixth Formers and confirmed that 70% of our current Year 13 have already received offers from their chosen universities. He introduced a number of changes to the Sixth Form which have been made in response to student feedback, demonstrating how our students are active stakeholders in shaping their own community. Guests were then invited to ask questions to our student panel and then able to visit the academic departments to inform their choice of subject.
However, there were also plenty of chances to indulge in some Christmas shopping whilst supporting local charities as part of this year's 'Tycoon in Schools' competition. The Year 12 students were on hand to talk through their business ideas for this year's competition. We wish them all the best of luck!
