AKS Pupils mark Remembrance Day by holding poppy design competition

Pupils at AKS school in Lytham are marking Remembrance Day by holding a competition where they design their own poppies.

Design and Technology students from years 7 and 8 have been showing off their creative flare to mark the day that World War One ended and remember all affected by war.

The school is hosting Remembrance Services to mark the significant day, reflecting on sacrifices and highlighting why it’s important to remember.

AKS Lytham have displayed their collaborative sculpture which is hanging in the school entrance, featuring individual poppies, designed by Year 7 in 2018.

Year 8 pupil Toby reflects “I think it’s a good idea we remember and show our respect. The sculpture represents many different pupils in our school community.”

Staff member Sarah Burke from AKS Design and Technology, said: “Each year I look forward to Remembrance lessons as pupils always show compassion and share personal family stories. The idea was to embed key learning through analysing past designs and encouraging pupils to use these as inspiration.”

“Here at AKS pupils learn about computer aided design from preparatory school age, which is consolidated and enhanced in senior school in our Technology department.”

“We wanted to create a collaborative sculpture which demonstrates pupil innovation and hope this will be enjoyed by all”

Current year 7 at AKS have all entered a ‘Poppy design competition’ and winners will be announced in school and rewarded with stationery prizes for their efforts.

Pupil Jessica enthused “This task allowed us to learn sophisticated software and help us to design something important. I enjoyed looking at different designs from the past.”
