AKS Open Day a Huge Success

Bringing Learning to Life Everyday (Whatever the Weather!)

Last Saturday was Open Day at AKS Lytham, an opportunity for people to come and see what makes our school the leading independent school on the Fylde and Wyre.  Despite the poor weather it was an extremely busy day with lots of visitors and prospective families discovering the rich history and traditions of the school, as well as the diverse learning opportunities and the highest standard of facilities to enable every child to thrive.  The AKS student guides were in constant demand and thoroughly enjoyed showing our many guests around their school and were proud to answer any questions and to share their unique perspectives.  Some of the highlights of the day were: the Science Department with a creepy crawly roadshow; the enchanting Music Department, where the many ensembles and practitioners could be observed performing their skills; the Drama Department, who showcased Macbeth and other Shakespearean favourites; a Combined Cadet Force field display (inside!); and a wide-arrange of sports in our two sports halls and on the sports fields.  Mr. Walton, the AKS headmaster, gave an informative presentation in the Senior School Hall at the start of the afternoon,  followed by a Q&A session with four Year 8 students who bravely but confidently faced the large room of visitors.  A common message throughout the day was that AKS ‘Brings Learning to Life’ on a daily basis and all our students continuously find their passions and pathways to be successful in life.  We also welcomed many community partners and friends of AKS who we work with throughout the school year, these included: the LSA Classical Association; the Lytham Parent’s Speaker Series; our volunteer archivists and alumni; the PTA; and the Ladies Luncheon Club.  To top of an outstanding day, our award-winning catering team, served up a Tudor banquet for everyone in the Senior Hall.  AKS welcomes visitors at any time throughout the year, you can book a private tour, taster day or just pop-in for a visit, more information can be found on our website: www.akslytham.com Thursday 8th November, 7pm, is Sixth Form Open Evening – you can register online now.

Connecting with our heritage: QMS

An interview with Miss Joan Charlton, a well-known former headmistress of Queen Mary School (QMS) by our archive volunteers

The archives comprise five collections of material relating to Arnold, King Edward VII School, Queen Mary School, KEQMS and AKS. Each consists of a diverse collection of school records containing all kinds of items as well as pupil files.  We have architects’ plans, admissions registers, correspondence, speech day addresses, commemorative albums, school magazines, some text books and pupils’ exercise books,  drama and music programmes, photographs, trophies, items of uniform, framed portraits and paintings, pottery, furniture and even a rug.  There is always room for more and we welcome the donation of relevant items.

The archives span over 120 years of history. They contain a wealth of information relating to local history and many accounts of social and historical importance, especially with regard to the wartime years and the impact of education on women’s role in society.

A small team of volunteers is dedicated to each archive and is wholeheartedly supported by school.  New volunteers to help with cataloguing via the dedicated computer software or with identifying photographs are always welcome. AKS pupils can join the Archive Club to learn about conservation, cataloguing and how to identify items for the new AKS archive.  To get in touch:  archives@akslytham.com
