U13 Nora Lipscombe Rugby 7s Tournament

U13 Nora Lipscombe Rugby 7s Tournament

AKS played host to the Nora Lipscombe Under 13 Sevens Tournament on Monday 4th March.  Despite the wet and blustery weather, the tournament was a huge success with almost 200 students playing from 16 schools.  The schools participating were from across the country, with Rydal Penrhos travelling from North Wales and King William’s College from the Isle of Man making the trip across the water to join competition.

The success of the competition on the field was aided by the support of three OAKS (AKS alumni), who helped referee the event; namely Ben Godfrey, father of Reece who played in the tournament and despite Ben’s refereeing endeavours, he was able to watch and cheer on the squad throughout the day.  In addition, we were joined by Fylde 1st XV player Adam Lanigan and Waterloo Ladies 1st XV player Laura Perrin.  As well as playing in the premiership for Waterloo, Laura was also recently selected for England U20’s squad, which is a great achievement and we wish he luck in her future rugby career.

Reflecting on the tournament Mr Holmes, Master in charge of rugby said “It was wonderful to get the support of former students from the school. This competition has been running for a number of years and has grown over the past 4 years to be a sizable occasion that we see today.  Having the OAKS involved adds to the sense of tradition and it not only strengthens our AKS community, but the former students act as fantastic role models for the students taking part.”

Within the competition itself, we saw some scintillating play across 48 games of rugby and with a staggering 318 tries scored.  Following the group stage, Wirral Grammar, Lancaster Royal Grammar School, West Hill and Kirkham Grammar progressed in to the plate, with Wirral Grammar topping the group following a strongly contested match against runners up Kirkham Grammar.

In the Trophy competition Hutton Grammar topped the group with St Mary’s Hall coming as runners up.  In the Plate competition AKS Lytham U13s came first ahead of Rydal Penrhos.  Finally, in the Bowl competition, St Mary’s Crosby won with local rivals Merchant Taylor’s runners up.

Overall this was a wonderful day and a great experience for all students involved.
