As many of our parents and students know, outside of school Mr Thomas plays and conducts in many brass bands, this weekend he was the Winning Conductor at an entertainments contest as the musical director of the Blackburn and Darwen band.
Mr Thomas and the Blackburn & Darwen Band blew the opposition away at a national brass band entertainments Contest in Wychavon, Worcestershire this weekend by beating 18 other bands from the UK, Germany and Norway with their musical portrayal of the D-Day landings of World War 2.
The band’s 20 minute programme consisted of four pieces with dialogue and told the story of a farmer‘s son from Darwen being called up to fight in the war. The adjudicator was impressed with the standard of performance and loved the story telling element of their set.
Ably led by their M.D. Mr Thomas (also praised by the adjudicator), they beat Brass Band Regensburg from Germany into second with Enderby Band from Leicestershire in third. AKS's Mr Brown was also part of the band helping out on percussion and playing a pivotal role in their success.
The first prize of £900 will help towards their goal of achieving Championship section status (the Premier League of the brass band world), improving the standard of their flourishing Junior Band and attracting more players to their Beginner band.
Mr Thomas and his fantastic band will be playing at AKS senior school on Friday the 6th of December alongside the premiere performance by the Prep School Giant Orchestra. Students from AKS Senior and Prep school will be involved as soloists and leading the audience in the first carols of the year!
Those who have seen the recent videos of our Year 4 trombonists, our Year 3 violinists and full 80 piece orchestra practice will know this event should not be missed - keep your eyes peeled for further details about the concert on social media and school communications.
Congratulations to Mr Thomas and Mr Brown and we look forward to welcoming your band here at AKS!
