Quiz Team Challenge - North West
Two teams of Year 7 and 8 pupils travelled across country to Bury Grammar School on a rainy Tuesday in March to face off against 14 other teams from independent schools across the north-west in this year's test of general knowledge and quick-finger prowess. Confidence was high on the minibus as Mr. Smyth and Mr. Bridges looked for their teams to emulate 2018's success when AKS came away as winners of the Plate Competition.
Drawn in separate groups for the initial stages of the event, AKS 'B' (Olivia, Devin, Jessica and Victoria) earned a tight victory in game one of their campaign against Calday Grange, but fell just short in their second encounter against Bury Grammar School 'B'; their third contest saw the team beaten by Lancaster Grammar School 'A', who progressed to the semi-final of the main competition. AKS 'B', unfortunately, lost on points totalled in what transpired to be a three-way tie for the runner-up spot, and so were eliminated.
In their three group contests, AKS 'A' swept all before them and were ushered into the semi-finals. The team (Miranda, Alex, Ashwin and Anna) always looked to be the favourites following their strong opening in the semi-final against Bury's 'A' team and won through by a margin of 620-300 points; this set up a final against the clearly strong Lancaster team, who had emerged as winners of the group containing the AKS 'B' team.
The final proved to be one step too far for AKS 'A', though it was noted by the scorer that they clearly fought back after the halfway point and were the stronger side in the second half of the 30-minute contest. Speed of answering starter questions on the buzzer proved decisive and Lancaster had the edge in this regard, though AKS certainly played a vigorous part in a tremendous conclusion to the competition and pulled out some stunning answers, hopefully learning a little along the way, as well as having fun and performing as a true team.
