Prep Food Science Masterclass with Nutritionist
This week pupils in Years 2, 3 and 6 enjoyed a special ‘master class’ on food science with Mrs Georgia Page, (food nutrition and healthy eating expert) from Chartwells, who provide the catering services at AKS.
During the masterclass, the children participated in lots of discussions on what young people need to do to keep their bodies healthy, so they have enough energy to learn, play and grow. We really enjoyed discussing the rainbow of fruits and vegetables and some of us were brave enough to try something new.
We were so impressed with how much the children remembered from their previous lessons on healthy eating and the importance of eating nutritious food, exercising and getting enough sleep.
After lots of discussion, the children rolled up their sleeves to create their very own healthy Granola snack bars, using lots of healthy low-fat natural ingredients.
There were lots of different tasty options made using oats, pumpkin seeds, dried fruits, and maple syrup to bind them together. Other ideas were honey, oats, raisins, and peanut butter! The children soon realised the key to making them set firm was to use plenty of oats and to really work the mixture until stiff.
Despite some children never having tried a shop-bought ‘Granola’ snack before, they couldn’t wait to taste test their recipes, albeit with mixed reviews! Everyone agreed they were very filling and would be a good snack alternative to keep them energised in-between meals. All were made of course, without using refined sugar or dairy, although you couldn’t tell! The children were pleasantly surprised to find they were really tasty, chewy, and sweet, many of them saying they’d be making more later at home!
All the children learnt lots, including tips on limiting sugar before bedtime to help with sleep, keep hydrated to stay alert, and the importance of eating breakfast to avoid being grumpy during the day!
Finally, another big thank you to our Head Chef Steve Shepherd for making it all possible.
