Peter Jones CBE will crown the winners of Tycoon in Schools at Buckingham Palace

LONDON – 13TH FEBRUARY 2017 – Peter Jones CBE has announced a team of budding entrepreneurs from AKS Lytham as finalists in his nationwide enterprise competition, Tycoon in Schools.

The six Year 12 students from Lancashire are one of just eight teams who will attend Buckingham Palace for the awards ceremony on Monday 6th March.

They officially launched their business idea The Lytham Christmas Company to market in October, which produced rustic reindeers as gifts for the festive period.

Ben Smyth, member of Lytham Christmas Company, said; “Being named as finalists is unbelievable. Tycoon in Schools is an amazing experience that has helped us learn key skills for life that you would never learn in the classroom. We’ve started out on our dreams of being entrepreneurs, whilst raising a lot of money for an extremely good cause. We can’t wait to visit Buckingham Palace and meet the other teams, Peter Jones and HRH The Duke of York. Who knows, we might even win!”.

This year, the stakes were higher than ever before, as the competition officially expanded into primary schools for the very first time. Over 100 teams of children as young as five went head-to-head, starting their own businesses and trading between October and December.

The Lytham Cristmas Company were one of the eight teams that stood out amongst over 150 teams taking part in the competition from across the UK. The budding young tycoons received £71 as a start-up loan from the Peter Jones Foundation, and had a final profit ratio of a fantastic 3796%.

Mike Walton, Headmaster at AKS Lytham added; “Following the success of our student Tycoons last year, with Essence Candles named runners up, we are delighted that our teams were again so creative this year. With the Lytham Christmas Company being invited to Buckingham Palace for the finals, I can honestly say that the spirit of entrepreneurship at AKS is flying high - our students know that this competition adds such value to their educational experience”.

In total, over two thousand high-calibre students received funding to start their businesses. This year, businesses spanned from upcycling to film-nights, e-sports tournaments and printing children’s books.

The competition has grown by a staggering 300 per cent since it was launched in 2012, and sits at the heart of Peter’s mission to put enterprise at the heart of the education system. Schools involved spanned the length and breadth of the country, including over 150 teams of children

The impact in encouraging the nation’s young people into entrepreneurship is clear to see. According to a survey of students that took part in the initiative last year, 70% feel that taking part in Tycoon in Schools has made them want to start their own business in the future.
