It's a Musical March at AKS

From opportunities for soloists, ensembles, choirs, orchestras, ranging from church music to swing, there's something for everyone this March at AKS.

As his department prepares for a raft of events in the coming weeks, Mr Waterhouse, Director of Music, shared his observations about why music helps our students achieve success both in and out of the classroom.  He explained, “Some people think that if they don’t want to become a professional musician, then there’s no point in studying music, however there are many reasons why it’s beneficial to be involved in some capacity.

Music engages us on so many levels, in terms of language, science, art and history. It supports brain development due to the complexity of doing different actions with our feet and hands (in the case of the piano); students are also challenged to consider timing, emphasis and how to convey emotion. Those working together learn how to collaborate and their enjoyment is clear to see in their performances.

The benefits of music are countless, whether students sit the Trinity or ABRSM exams, go on to do GCSE, A-Level or University courses, or if they’re involved with our choirs and ensembles in a more informal way.”

We’ve just finished a successful series of lunchtime recitals which were open to members of the public and which took place at local churches over the past four weeks, as well as our musical showcase at our Senior School Open Evening last week. Our students are now continuing to work on their performances for the following events taking place at the school in March: the Trinity and ABRSM music exams, ranging from ‘Initial’ piano exams, to Grade 8 Saxophone; providing introductory music for the Rotary Respect Awards; the Year 3 & 4 play, “The Pied Piper”; our latest Senior School Tea Time Concert and Junior School concerts later on this term and next.

External events also include:

* 22nd March, Joining the Lytham Community Choir Present An Evening of Music at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool (tickets available from the box office)

* 23rd & 24th March, Lytham St Annes Performing Arts Festival, hosted at AKS (further information can be found through the Festival website)

* 29th March, An evening of Swing, Stage & Screen (tickets available now from our School Shop)

We hope you'll be able to join us as we celebrate our talented students and encourage a love of music for all!
