On Friday 27th April, the school welcomed parents and members of the school community to a showcase of musical flair. Despite an unexpected delay, the promise of an Evening of Swing, accompanied by prosecco and canapés, kept spirits up.
The Swing Band readied themselves on stage for the first big number of the evening, ‘Chameleon’. The band, comprised of students of all ages, played a versatile repertoire throughout, ranging from swing classics to songs with a more Latin vibe.
Soloists and groups scattered the evening; professional, accomplished and stirring, each one better than the one before. Alicia C silenced the room with her performance of ‘Pictures of You’ by the Cure, and Jenny L gave an energetic and experienced performance of ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’. With the Y7 singers adding a lighthearted sweetness to the evening with ‘Pure Imagination’ and No Angels bringing a touch of summer with their performance of ‘Havana’, the considerable talent of the music department shone through. Souled Out offered their music and vocals to the school’s dance group, combining to create an entertaining performance of ‘ I Wanna be Like You’.
The choir sang some classic numbers: ‘Down by the Riverside’, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ plus the evening’s show-stopper with the band, an exuberant sing-along of ‘Celebration’. The 80’s hit ensured performers and audience alike left the evening smiling, having enjoyed an amazing and diverse few hours of pure entertainment.
